AKIRA

Wednesday 21 September 2022 Retrofuture Section by Katsuhiro Ōtomo (Japan, 1988) 124' In Italian A milestone of the Japanese dystopian sci-fi genre. The film is based on the manga of the same name. After the atomic bomb, Japan soon began to re-elaborate the atrocious grief it had to endure, and all the anxieties relating to that period that emerge in this film. The story is set in the dystopian world of 2019, after World War III, a conflict that erupted following an explosion that razed the city of Tokyo to the ground. Thirty years later, on the ashes of the old Japanese capital rises the so-called Neo Tokyo, a city full of conflict and rebellion where the return of Akira, the saviour, has been long waited for. Akira is a mysterious being who, while he may be the cause of the outbreak of the world war, is also believed to be the one who should wipe off the face of the Earth those unworthy to inhabit it, which is why he is called 'the saviour'. A masterpiece to be seen in a cinema hall to appreciate the infinite details of each scene, the colours, the fluidity of its animation and the evocative power of its images.
